Reverse engineering profiles for CAD

Say you have something with curves or fillets you need to 3D print a copy of. Let's take for example the item above.
In theory, you could just measure whatever dimensions are possible. Maybe you'll do some fancy constraints.

But seeing how small the item is, how accurate can you actually be?
Turns out you don't have to do any of that. Just scan the part on any normal printer, convert to an image and you can insert it into your CAD software. Just ensure that the conversion is as high resolution as possible.
